The 2019 Oscars nominations for Best Director included BLACKKKLANSMAN by Spike Lee, COLD WAR by Pawel Pawlikowski, THE FAVOURITE by Yorgos Lanthimos, VICE by Adam McKay, and of course the winner, ROMA by Alfonso Cuarón. It is no surprise that Alfonso along with his compatriots Guillermo Del Torro and Alenjandro Iñárritu have won multiple Oscars among themselves in large part due to the rich history of Mexican cinema which has had the full support of IMCINE (the Mexican Institute of Cinema). No doubt if American Latinos were afforded similar support in the United States there would be even more diversity in Hollywood and more Oscar winners.
Alfonso’s creativity and vision first came to prominence with his film, A LITTLE PRINCESS which was set in the imaginary world of a young girl. Later, Alfonso would go on to direct HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN also in the fantasy genre. His dramatic pieces such as Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, CHILDREN OF MEN, and GRAVITY have all been critically acclaimed.
